There has been a recent emergence of Aboriginal-run child welfare agencies that strive to meet the complex needs of Native families and reduce the number of children being removed from their homes due to an unstable environment. These agencies focus on repairing the harm that is a result of the residential schools.

Although there has been a lot of recent advancements towards more equal treatment of Aboriginals there is still much to learn and improve on. Barriers to advancements include difficulties gathering research in rural areas as well as research that does not combine all Canadian youth together. Statistical research focused around Aboriginal youth has only recently been documented, so there is very little literature to learn from and compare new research with.
Stephen Harper recently announced the distribution of nearly 2 billion dollars over the span of 7 years. Although this amount seems like it can make a great difference, on-reserve schools will still not be up to public school standards. Unfortunately, in the state that the on-reserve schools are at now, it would take MUCH more to make the school systems equal.
