Since the time the Western world discovered North America and came into contact with the Aboriginal population, the Aboriginals have been taken advantage of and their culture has been nearly destroyed. With the introduction of new diseases, new foods, and the creation of the residential school systems, over half of the Aboriginal population had died off. The residential school systems were put in place to deculturate the children and youth. They were removed from their homes, and in many cases, abused and neglected to the point of death.
In 2007, Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, stated a formal apology to the Aboriginal community for all the unequal and culturally damaging treatment they endured. This apology statement can be viewed HERE. Although this was appreciated, the damage had already been done. Unequal treatment and instilled prejudices still exist and will take years to repair.
The sense of helplessness and hopelessness is still very evident in the Aboriginal culture and has been passed through the generations. With this comes several underlying issues that many Canadian Aboriginals must face on a daily basis. Our hopes to educate others and advocate for this inspiring, talented, and naturally compassionate cultural group is our contribution to the attempt to repair the harm.
